Leaving our non-human family behind when we go away can be a very worrying experience and you may often wish that you could take them with you, but most times that is simply not possible. Finding a responsible, professional, individual to take care of your pet (s) may be the preferred option rather than leaving them housed in a boarding facility. What about a pet sitter? Having spent the past five years building up our professional home and pet sitting services, here are some tips on finding a professional, qualified, well vetted, pet and home sitter to care for your pets.
Employ the services of a professional pet sitter via a reputable organisation that on the one hand, has built up a 'local' reputation of excellent service, and on the other, provides only qualified, professional, well vetted sitters. Such vetting should always include the requirement that such sitters are in possession of an up-to-date Advanced Clearance Certificate from the SAPS.
Always insist on meeting your proposed sitter well before the start of the sit, check how the sitter interacts with your pets and how he or she responds to your specific needs. Your sitter should come armed with contactable references. Remember, a reputable sitter service will have already thoroughly vetted the sitter in terms of their personal background, experience and referrals.
Most home insurance policies do not cover the home owner for damage, accident or negligence on the part of an ad-hoc pet and home sitter, and most independent pet sitters do not have public liability insurance cover. Be sure that the sitter you employ is covered, and can provide written proof of commercial, public liability covering accidents and negligence.
Do not underestimate the word of mouth. Let's face it, anyone can look good on paper or on Facebook. However, a mature, qualified sitter will come complete with recommendations from other satisfied home owners who have utilised their service, and have the stand-by support from an established sitter service.
Pet sitting is as varied as your needs may be. Along with live-in care, there may be other requirements, such as grooming, outdoor exercise, walking the dog (s) as well as administering medication. Once you have decided on your pet's needs, do your internet research to find the best sitter service for you.
